The story behind the candy cane

Much of the story of the Candy Cane is a legend, but there seem to be parts of the story that is known to be true. It is nice to read about what we know and fantasize about what we don’t know for sure. It is such a nice story for Christmas time!

Who invented the candy cane?

From what I have learned, it seems that the origin of the Candy Cane started around 1670 in Germany. A local candy manufacturer, who was a German choir in the Cologne Cathedral, began to make these candy sticks to keep the children still. In honor of the living day care center, however, he bowed the first candy in the form of the staff of a shepherd. This made them “more appropriate” for the solemn ceremony.

I don’t know how you are, but in my experience it can be a challenge to still keep little ones during a service. What a great idea this Kooriraster had! Maybe you can try it this season.

So the tradition of giving candy sticks when Christmas gifts started in the early 1800s. At that time it was common for people to give small gifts to their friends and family members during the holidays. The candy cane became popular because it was easy to make and it could be packed in small boxes or bags. Over time, the meaning of the candy cane has evolved, but history remains steeped in tradition!

The Candy Cane then became popular in Europe, but the candy cane was originally only a stick pure white hard candy and not flavored. Allegedly it was a man named August Imgard, who was a German immigrant, who brought the sweets to the United States and put it in his Christmas tree in 1847. Only after 1900 did the candy fright stripes and peppermint oil or spear tint be made for taste. Let me tell you about that.

Only in 1919 Bob McCormack, a candy maker, started to produce the now popular candy cane. In the beginning Bob’s sweets had to make them in the form of a “J” by hand, but later had a machine to get the shape. They have been the same for more than a hundred years now!

How did the candy fry get its stripes?

The Candy Cane legend says that the candy maker wanted his new candy to represent the holidays. It is a bit like a secret code with Christian meanings! The red stripes on the candy represent the blood of Christ. The white stripes of the sweets represent the sinless nature of Jesus. It is also said that the 3 stripes (those who have it) represent the three unit, while the hardness of the candy represents the solid rock on which the church was founded.

What does a upside down candy cane mean?

Some say that the form of the candy cane represents the staff of the good shepherds, while others say it is the letter “J” to represent Jesus. However, do not forget that the first candy sticks were actually straight sticks of white candy, but the choir killer bent them. This was in the 17th century that the candy cane took its familiar curved shape to represent the staff of a shepherd, which is an important symbol in the Christmas story. If you think about it, Jesus is the great Shephard.
