As you ponder your current path, may these reflections from the King James version of Proverbs serve as field markers to guide you toward God’s good and perfect will.
When you stumble
I have instructed you in the way of wisdom; I have guided you in straight paths. When you go, your steps will not be limited; and if you run, you will not stumble (Proverbs 4:11-12).
If we need a prescription for a good, stumbling-free life, with our feet on the straight path, we need only heed God’s admonition to walk in the way of wisdom, and allow our Heavenly Father to guide us on the straight path. This wisdom keeps us from straying from God’s path and going our own way. Although there are attractions on the wrong path, we must look away from them, for they are merely distractions.
Father, you teach me in the way of wisdom and you guide me in the right paths. Therefore, I pray that my steps will not be hindered and that I may run without stumbling.
By staying on God’s path, you will not stumble and your steps will not be limited.
When you stray
Do not enter the path of the wicked and do not enter the path of the wicked. Avoid it, do not pass by it, turn away from it and pass by (Proverbs 4:14-15).
As we walk in God’s path, we are safe from evil because we trust in God’s keeping power. But if we foolishly walk in the path of the wicked, we will fall and even face destruction. Therefore, we must avoid the path of the evil one; and if we find ourselves on the wrong path, we must immediately turn away and return to the path of the righteous. God allows U-turns when we are on the wrong path.
Father, I have seen evil and experienced its destructive effects. Therefore I avoid even a first glance at evil. Instead, I turn away from it and run from it.
If you recognize evil, turn away quickly and keep to the path of the righteous.
Look straight ahead
Let your eyes look straight ahead, and let your eyelids look straight ahead. Consider the path of your feet and let all your ways be established (Proverbs 4:25-26).
The path of the righteous is a straight path. To arrive safely at our destination, we walk briskly ahead, with our eyes on the prize. The distractions to our right and left are a facade. Behind them lies a life full of false illusions, born of the evil one. Take your foot out of enemy territory and be safe. Yes, the temptations may be strong, but you are even stronger. Trials and temptations are to be expected, but the Christian knows that these are temporary and will eventually pass. We take to heart the words of Jesus: “No one who puts his hand to the plow and looks back is fit for the kingdom of God” (Luke 9:62).
Father, be the guardian of my eyes. Help me not to be distracted by problems to my right and left. The prize is in front of you, not in the distractions of the path.
Keep your eyes looking forward and not back.
