Roller Skating as an Adult, Finding My Balance Again

I have written about roller skating before, although that piece was more of a playful nudge to anyone curious about trying something new with their kids.

This time, the story feels different. It feels personal. Somewhere between school drop off, work deadlines, and keeping up with the general chaos of life, I found myself craving something that was just for me. Something fun. Something that got me moving. Something that snapped my brain out of the endless mental load loop.

So I went back to an old childhood love, roller skating, and it has quietly become one of the best things I have done for my health, my confidence, and my sense of self.

The Fear Is Real, but So Is the Rush

Let’s get the honest part out of the way. When you’re an adult, especially a mum who knows exactly how long it takes to recover from an injury, the fear of falling is real. Every time I lace up my skates, there’s a moment where I picture myself in a cast, trying to pack school lunches one-handed.

But once you start rolling, something shifts. Your brain has no choice but to focus. You can’t think about the laundry or the emails or the snacks someone will insist they never asked for. You’re completely in the moment. That level of focus is rare for mums, and it feels like a little holiday inside your own head.

And yes, sometimes I wobble. Sometimes I fall. But every time, I get back up a bit braver.

Why Roller Skating Might Be the Most Underrated Workout

Roller skating is sneaky. It looks like fun, and it is, but it is also an incredibly effective full body workout. After my first proper session, I discovered muscles I had apparently been ignoring for decades.

A few perks I’ve noticed:

  • Strong legs without doing squats in the lounge.
  • Better balance and posture, which my back has thanked me for.
  • A surprisingly good cardio workout, especially when you get into a rhythm.
  • A huge lift in mood, which lasts longer than any coffee I’ve ever ordered.

And then we need to talk about the glutes. After many years of parenting, sitting, driving, and everything else that leaves them a little neglected, mine are finally starting to lift again. Skating makes them work hard in the best possible way. Sure, they can be absolutely on fire after a session and sitting on the toilet the next morning can be a tiny bit painful, but watching your glutes defy gravity is worth every wobbly squat and burning stride. It feels like reclaiming a part of myself I’d quietly written off.

It feels good to move in a way that isn’t about burning calories or fixing anything. It is playful movement, and that feels like something we all need more of.

Building Confidence, One Glide at a Time

There’s something empowering about learning a skill as an adult. You don’t have the natural fearlessness of childhood, and you’re very aware of your own limits. Yet every small improvement, every smooth turn, every moment you don’t crash into a wall, feels like a win.

I didn’t expect roller skating to rebuild my confidence in such a steady and surprising way. It has become proof that I can try new things, even scary things, and get better at them. It has also helped me rediscover parts of myself that had gone quiet.

Skating gives me a sense of identity that sits outside being a wife or a mother. It is something that is entirely my own and that alone builds confidence in a way I did not see coming.

Learning new skills, surprising myself, and feeling proud of my progress reminds me that I am still allowed to grow and change as a person. It feels good to have a hobby that belongs to me and not to any of the roles I fill for other people.

Finding Community on Wheels

One thing I didn’t expect was the community. Roller skating attracts people who are welcoming, supportive, and genuinely excited to help beginners. There is a sense of camaraderie that feels rare in adult life.

Making new friends as a mum can be hard. Not all of us click with school mum circles, and sometimes the loneliness of parenting sneaks up on us. Skating has given me a new sense of belonging. Even when we barely know each other’s names, there’s a shared joy in cheering for someone who finally nails a transition or manages three seconds of backwards skating.

As I kept showing up, I found myself surrounded by people from every walk of life. Teenagers, retirees, office workers, artists, parents, people who have skated for decades, and people who only just worked up the courage to try. The mix is part of the magic.

I’ve especially loved the friendships that have grown with a few gay men in our group. They bring such warmth, humour, and openness to every session. Listening to their stories, their weekend adventures, and the confidence they carry so naturally has become something I treasure. I get to live a little vicariously through their fabulousness while wobbling along on my wheels.

It feels good to be part of something where everyone is simply showing up to have fun and where community grows without trying.

Getting Started

Sydney makes getting into roller skating a little tricky since we no longer have proper roller skating venues. It feels like such a loss because so many of us would happily spend hours rolling around indoors if we had the chance.

Thankfully, a few motivated people are working hard to keep skating alive in the city and to bring accessible spaces back into the community. If you happen to be in Victoria or Brisbane though, you’re in luck because proper skate rinks still exist and the scene there feels alive in a way Sydney mums can only dream about at the moment.

One of the brightest lights in the roller skating world is RollerFit. It is one of the few companies still proudly waving the roller skating banner across Australia. Anyone who has dipped a toe, or a wheel, into the skating scene knows the name Stacey.

Stacey, RollerFit’s Director, has basically lived her whole life on wheels. She started skating at age four and went on to become an Australian national competition level skater . She is an icon in the Australian skating community and the kind of person whose passion spills over into everything she touches.

Her love for skating runs deep. Her talent as a coach is unmatched and her joy for the sport is infectious. So many of the current RollerFit team members started their journeys under her guidance which says everything about the kind of leader she is.

If you are starting out and feeling a bit lost, organisations like RollerFit are an incredible place to begin. They know how to make adults feel welcome, supported, and safe while learning something new. And you never know, it might be the exact kind of fun you have been craving.

A Hobby That Sticks

I started skating because I wanted something for myself. I kept skating because it has made me feel stronger, clearer, and more connected to a community I didn’t even know I needed. Sure, I can do the things most mums do, and I actually do them, like yoga and walking, but skating offered something different. It felt creative. I could add a bit of flair, play with style, and enjoy a hobby that not everyone else is doing. Plus, it is a brilliant conversation starter when someone asks what I do for fun.

If you’re looking for a hobby that lets you move your body, quiet your mind, and maybe even meet a few lovely humans along the way, give roller skating a try. You might be shaky at first, but the joy sneaks up on you.
