First Aid For Choking Kids: Essential Techniques Every Parent Should Know

Everyone should learn how to do first aid for choking kids!

Choking is a serious medical emergency that can happen to anyone, including children. When a child chokes, their airway becomes blocked, which can lead to difficulty breathing or even suffocation. As a parent, knowing how to perform first aid for choking can mean the difference between life and death.

The first thing you should do if your child is choking is to assess the situation. If your child is coughing, allow them to continue coughing, as this may help them to dislodge the object that is blocking their airway. If your child is not coughing, or if their coughing is not effective in dislodging the object, you should act quickly to remove the blockage.

To perform first aid for a choking child, follow these steps:

  1. Encourage your child to cough: Ask your child to cough forcefully, as this may help to dislodge the object.
  2. Administer back blows: If your child is still choking, stand behind them and give them five back blows between their shoulder blades.
  3. Perform abdominal thrusts: If back blows don’t work, stand behind the child, wrap your arms around their waist and make a fist with one hand. Place your fist just above the child’s belly button and grasp it with your other hand. Give the child five quick, upward thrusts to the abdomen.
  4. Continue alternate back blows and abdominal thrusts until the object is dislodged, or until emergency services arrive.

It’s important to note that choking is a medical emergency and if you are unsure about what to do or if your child’s condition worsens, call for emergency medical services immediately.

Where Can You Learn First Aid

Learning first aid is an essential skill that can save lives in emergency situations. It can help you become more confident in handling an emergency and provide immediate assistance until professional help arrives. There are several ways to learn first aid in Australia, depending on your preference and availability.

Another way to learn first aid is by taking an online course. There are many websites and platforms that offer free or paid first aid courses that you can complete at your own pace. These courses cover a wide range of topics, from basic first aid to more advanced topics such as wilderness first aid or pediatric first aid. However, it’s important to ensure that the online course you choose is recognized by reputable organizations and provides certification upon completion.

I love the way the gumball just casually rolls out as the kid looks like he’s fricking dying

My wife’s friend just lost her two year old son. He choked on a piece of cantaloupe, ended up in a coma for a week, and passed away earlier this morning. While many factors were at play here I can’t imagine how i’d live with myself if i’d discovered I tried to help my choking son incorrectly.

Small children who are choking should not be given the heimlich maneuver. They require back-blows and a range of other techniques that are learned in CPR and childcare classes.

My girl choked in the middle of a restaurant once when she was a toddler. I had no idea what the hell I was doing, but I started giving her back blows pretty rapidly. Eventually a little food came out and she started crying, but I was completely panicked at that point and I just kept thumping her back until the guy at the table next to me grabbed my arm and said “she’s OK now, she’s crying so she’s breathing.”

There’s nothing I can think of scarier than the realization that you kid might be about to die right in front of your eyes.

I just went to a first aid class for babies this very weekend. If baby is choking (really choking like in this case, not coughing) you put them belly first on your lap, stretch the chin a bit so airway is free and slap in between their shoulders 5 times. If that doesn’t help, move baby around, head a bit down and push with two fingers(!!) in between their chest area.

Meanwhile they recommend calling an ambulance just to be on the safe side. This is in Germany though, so calling an ambulance doesn’t ruin you even if baby is totally okay when they arrive.
