Tips for choosing a leading word

For me I just knew for a few years what I had to work on. In fact, I once went for two years with the same word – gentle. I especially had to be reminded of that word when I had many small children running around and fighting every little thing. However, if nothing jumps to you, there are some tips for choosing a guidance or focus word.

  1. Loneliness. Sit somewhere where you can pray and focus. It can be as simple as sitting on your porch during a nap or in your living room after going to sleep. God knows your ins and outs, so pray and ask him to reveal a word to you.
  2. Consider your priorities and goals. Take a short time to think about your priorities in life and all the goals you have. This will help limit your focus.
  3. Reflection questions. While you work through this, pray and think about the following questions. Which aspects of your life are you struggling and what would you help grow? Which area wants to hold and use God to glorify himself by you? What does God want to achieve through you at the moment in your life? What good habits do you need to grow?
  4. Brainstorm. Write down every sentence or word that you can think of that really makes an agreement with you. It can be a character characteristic, a person/relationship, a discipline or a characteristic. I will give you some intentional words to help you on your way with ideas.

A few years ago I had an idea to grow in meaningful conversations. By prayer and focus I realized that I wanted to point others to Jesus through my life and conversation. I chose the word “beacon” as my word and Matthew 5: 14-16 (ESV) to go with it. “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. People also do not light a lamp and place it under a basket, but on a standard, and it gives light to everyone in the house. Let your light shine for others in the same way, so that they can see you good works and give glory to your father who is in heaven. ‘

I definitely recommend finding a verse to go with your word if possible. A few months later I thought of how a beacon had been difficult in the current state of events in the world, but then I realized that this blog is a way to point out to others to Jesus. God has completed more than I ever thought when I started that year!
