Let’s talk about laundry. 👕🧺
-
The dirty laundry that needs to be done because you no longer have clean clothes,
-
The beautiful Laundry that is waiting in the basket to be folded and put away,
-
The football socks, dance -pawns and sports sweaters that are never clean if you need them,
And my favorite …
Believe it or not, laundry is a regular subject in coaching sessions.
So if you have trouble keeping the laundry or implementing a system that helps you do the laundry without the fuss, you are not the only one!
And although it may seem like a very everyday, “small” subject to coach, it is actually one Great Thing to be coached because … it’s not just about the laundry.
Just as it is not just about the task list or the inbox or the meal plan.
It’s about the mental space That those things take up. ðŸ§
It’s about hanging something like laundry over your head.
And it’s about how that feels and how you pop up when you feel that way.
When you take the time to come up with a system or routine for the “smaller things”, such as laundry, you create space and capacity for the “bigger things”. Things such as going a promotion, being back on your marriage, starting a new hobby or activity, or becoming the parent you want to be.
Those bigger things are so much easier if you are not worried about whether you remembered that you were your child’s football shirt tonight for their game. Whether you feel frustrated that you forgot to move the washing machine to the dryer.
So if you want to get your laundry under control. Or really one of those daily, everyday chores, you have to do 2 things:
-
Make it your choice
-
Solve for the breakdown
I hate to break it up, but laundry and all those other everyday chores, will probably always be part of your life in one way or another. Even if you outsource them, management is to happen.
Do you want to spend the rest of your life with resistance? Be frustrated by it? Or do you just want to find a way to get it done without the drama? 🤷50
It may not always feel that way, but the laundry is a choice.
You think it’s not, but the truth is that you don’t to have To do it.
-
You could buy new clothes instead of the one you have to wash.
-
You could outsource it completely, soup to nuts.
-
You could wear dirty clothing!
But if you shake your head to those options, or others I don’t think about, then you are Are Choose to do the laundry.
You choose clean clothing, not to always buy new and to use your money on other things that do not outsource laundry.
Only because something is your choice does not mean that it must be so difficult.
So then you must find the breakdown in your current process and resolve it. 🤔
For me there are four (4) phases of laundry:
-
Dirty laundry in the washing machine
-
Move clean clothes from the washing machine to dryer (or hang dry)
-
Fold or sort
-
Road away (sideboard, baskets, cupboard, armoire, etc.)
Where does your breakdown happen?
For me, when we went from 2 to 3 children, I could not remember that I got the laundry in the washing machine early enough in the day in the washing machine. By the time I remember, it would be late in the evening and I would not stay to transfer it to the dryer. So I waited until the next day and the cycle repeated over and over again and the dirty clothes continued to accumulate in phase 1.
Then I discovered the “delay start” button on my machine and started loading dirty clothing at night before bedtime. They would be washed in the early morning and gave me enough time to transfer all day to the dryer as I could.
Perhaps for you, clothing will not be set up in stage 4. Can you wear the clean clothing basket to the room where your cupboard is and they store them the next time you dress or while the children brush their teeth and prepare for bed?
How can you make it easier to overcome the stage that breaks down?
There are of course many other tips and ideas for batch, involving the children and doing the laundry at times of the day when your energy is lower.
I encourage you to listen to the podcast episode to hear even more about the laundry.
But if you start to just remember that Laundry is a choice and then Solve for the breakdown in the processYou will be on your way to go out under a mountain of laundry and put that daily job on the autopilot.
Laundry, or another job, is not Worth your stress, frustration or really a considerable real estate in your brain.
Use that room for the things that matter.
