Why the beginning still matters: Helping your kids understand Genesis

“Why did God make the world?”

“Why is there so much pain?”

“Can God repair what is broken?”

If you are a parent, you probably have heard questions like this – or maybe they themselves ask themselves. And

If you ever come across that you try to answer, you are not the only one. But the truth is: the answers that our children have to start … in the beginning.

Genesis 1–3 is not only the opening of the Bible – it is the basis for everything our children should know about life, themselves, and especially God.

1. Creation shows our true identity

Nowadays, children are flooded with competing reports about who they are and what is important. Genesis 1 bases them in the unchanging truth: They were created by God, made in His image, with inherent value and purpose. Before we teach them what to do, we must help them understand WHO They are – promised children of a good and glorious creator.

2. Autumn explains our broken world

When children are confronted with disappointment, injustice or confusion, Genesis gives them clarity. It explains why the world feels broken and why hearts hurt. Instead of guessing or hiding difficult realities, we can help them see the bigger whole – that sin has changed everything, and that struggle is not only personally – it is universal.

3. A promise that hopes

Even in the midst of sin, God’s promise reflects in Genesis 3: 15 – A Savior comes to defeat the evil and to restore creation. That is not only theology for adults; It is a lifeline of hope for children. When they see God’s redeeming plan interwoven in the beginning, they begin to consider the entire Bible as a story of redemption – not just a collection of stories.

In a culture in which truth, goal and hope are often questioned, so that our children help understand the start of the Bible for life. As parents we don’t have to have all the answers – but we Doing Should she have the right starting point.

And even better? That starting point has already been written. It’s in Genesis.
